43 is More Than a Number on a Baseball Jersey

(OMAHA)-Marco Dinges is a committed member of the Florida State Seminoles baseball team, determined to help secure their first Men’s College World Series (MCWS) championship in the program’s history. Despite the team’s 24 appearances in the MCWS, they have yet to claim the title.

Just a year ago, Marco was diagnosed with hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a rare condition where white blood cells attack the body’s organs, potentially leading to organ failure. “It’s all about playing through adversity and coming back stronger. This year so far, I’ve done that to keep the road going,” said Marco, as he reflects on his rehabilitation.

On April 4, 2023, during a game against Chipola College, Marco developed a high fever, strep throat, and severe dehydration, preventing him from finishing the game. Instead, he was admitted to the hospital. Initially misdiagnosed with mono, he was later discovered to have HLH. His courageous fight included a 43-day hospitalization, during which he battled for his life.

As a tribute to his perseverance and resilience, Marco now wears jersey number 43, symbolizing each day he spent in the hospital overcoming this disease.

FSU will play UNC in another elimination game on Tuesday at 1 p.m
