OMAHA, Neb. — Friday night was a night of firsts for Omaha women’s soccer and Tim Walters. It was the team’s first game in front a home crowd and it was Walters’ first regular season appearance as head coach for Omaha. The fans were electric to start the match as the Omaha men’s soccer team just concluded a wild comeback win against Grand Canyon University.
The Mavericks immediately began the game by attacking the Panthers defense. They had multiple scoring opportunities but none proved successful. Mavericks became fatigued and momentum shifted the Panthers way very quickly. UNI recognized by possessing the ball and proceeding to fire shots at will towards Maverick goalkeeper Erin Bunker, it would expose the young freshman.
Eventually Sarah Brandt gave Northern Iowa the lead 1-0 in the 34th minute with a beautifully placed kick into the netting. This was the lone goal heading into halftime.
Immediately beginning the 2nd half Brynell Yount gave Northern Iowa a commanding 2-0 lead with a goal from the top of the box.
Walters did not like what he saw from his team concluding the game. He was visibly upset with his team’s effort. This game could be used as a teaching lesson for Walters to his team going forward.
The Mavericks fall to 0-3 after the loss to Northern Iowa. Omaha’s next matchup will be in Manhattan, Kansas against Kansas State August 30th at 7p.m. Their next home game is scheduled for September 8th against Missouri State at 4:30 p.m.
