(OMAHA, Neb.) – A 24-hour radio marathon hosted by MavRadio.FM is the highlight of this year’s World College Radio Day, Oct. 4, on the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s campus. The station will join at least 600 stations globally to celebrate the unique, and often fearless, content heard exclusively on campus radio stations. General Manager of Programming, Ben Helwig said MavRadio.FM will go live starting at Midnight and plans to feature local artists, alumni and live, interactive programming for the entire 24 hours.
“College Radio Day is going to be an experience unlike anything we’ve had here at MavRadio.FM,” he said. This year marks the second event the staff planned to coincide with the world-wide event. Last year, three artists showcased their music in a MBSC concert and, as a result, MavRadio.FM earned a coveted “Spirit of College Radio Day” award. In 2019, the staff said they want to take a different approach at creating an awareness of the importance of college radio. “Twenty-four hours straight of just having a good time in the studio, interviewing interesting people, and just enjoying the benefits of college radio,” Helwig said.
The staff plans to alternate on-air shifts and use social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and YouTube Live to invite the community to participate. According to the College Radio Day Task Force, World College Radio Day is set aside specifically for college radio to come together and be recognized. More than 40 countries have joined the movements since its creation in 2012. “I honestly cannot wait,” Helwig said.
