Here are my top 10 picks for September!
10. Starting with number 10, “Sit Still, Look Pretty” by the up-and-coming Daya is an empowering reminder to women, and anyone really, that our lives are so much more than picket fences and trophy wives. In a world that focuses on superficial, expensive things and the ideal of being in a relationship, Daya flips that upside down and laughs at it’s expectations.
9. For number 9, I picked “Hymn for the Weekend” by Coldplay, featuring the Queen Bey herself. I’ve personally known about this song and its corresponding album A Head Full of Dreams since last winter, but it still reigns supreme on the charts which is no surprise. Jody Rosen of Billboard calls it the album’s “grooviest” with its symphony of vocals, piano and percussion. It’s an all around great party song.
8. Moving on to number 8, “Never Be Like You” by Flume, featuring Kai, is a magical, haunting, apologetic, take-me-back tune that sweeps you off your feet once the beat drops. Sure to be stuck in your head for the rest of September.
7. Another hit I can’t seem to stop singing (err rather, making random noises that don’t make sense) is number 7, “Gold” by Kiiara. Though the lyrics are hard to understand, it doesn’t change the fact that this song has a perfect blend of sexy vocals and impressive beat drops. It truly makes you feel like you’re in a dark, smoky club after curfew.
6. Number 6 has to be “Into You” by Ariana Grande, hands down. Why? Turn this song on at any social gathering and you’ll probably get a cluster of girls/guys letting their freak flag fly. I, myself, can’t help getting goosebumps and letting loose when this song plays for its incredible catchiness and pulsing EDM waves. “Into You”… I’m into you.
5. Switching gears, number 5 goes to “We Don’t Talk Anymore” by Charlie Puth, featuring Selena Gomez. A painfully honest breakup duet perfectly paired with acoustics and electronic house will leave you dramatically staring out your window thinking about/checking your phone for that one person you don’t talk to anymore.
4. Changing the mood from wistful to kiss-off, I’ve picked “Needed Me” by my favorite artist, Rihanna, for number 4. Yet another woman who doesn’t need a man, Rihanna’s trappy, trippy, “don’t get it twisted” anthem says it all to the men she uses and throws away like the savage she really is.
3. Number 3 is none other than “Cheap Thrills” by Sia, featuring Sean Paul. All summer long, this song has been absolute ear candy with its bouncy, Europop beat, Sia’s powerful belts and Sean Paul’s reggae sound added to the mix. No doubt this hit will continue to play well into the fall.
2. Nearly to the top, for number 2, I’ve chosen “Cold Water” by Major Lazor, featuring Justin Bieber and MO. Its promising, acoustic/tropical sound fusion is almost guaranteeing its stay on top of the charts for a considerable time. A perfect cruise-with-the-windows-down tune will help keep us in denial about summer’s ending.
1. But summer coming to an end has a bright side, there are songs like my number 1 pick, “Heathens” by Twenty One Pilots, to get us ready for Halloween (muahahaha). It’s sullen, dark atmosphere warns us about his heathen friends, and alludes to/is featured in the 2016 supervillain blockbuster, Suicide Squad. This rock/alternative band has been successfully chart-topping for over a year, and I don’t see an end in sight.
