Kesterson’s Top Ten: October 2016

By Gabby Kesterson

October is always a great time for music. So check out my Top Ten picks for this month and tune in to MavRadio to hear your #1 source for Top 100!

Just a couple weeks ago The Weeknd released the single, “Starboy”. This song comes in at number 10 on my countdown because history has shown The Weeknd to dominate the Billboards, and this song is promising. It’s swinging electropop beat featuring Daft Punk is a change in pace from The Weeknd’s usually slower, more melancholy sound – and I’m not complaining. His album with the same name is to be released in late November.

Next on the countdown, for number 9, is “Starving” by Hailee Steinfeld & Grey featuring Zedd. I didn’t know that I was starving ’til I heard this song, because it’s dreamy, in-love vibes wonderfully mixed with Zedd’s electronic genius makes me want to constantly replay it. This song is yet another great teen anthem about young love that changes your perspective on the world.

Coming in at number 8, after being well-received all across Europe, “This Girl” by Kungs & Cookin’ On 3 Burners is the tune I’ve been looking for. It’s remixed funk vocals with deep beat trumpet drops make me want to wave my hands in the air like I just don’t care. This girl is diggin’ “This Girl”.

Number 7 goes to “My Way” by supreme chart-topper, DJ Calvin Harris. This upbeat, tropical house song goes to say that sometimes situations you thought were good, turn out to be much better once you’re out of them. Now, whether he’s relating this to his recent breakup with Taylor Swift, we may never know, but this song is a slap-in-the-face to whoever was the one thing in his way.

Making way for number 6, “i hate u, i love u” by gnash featuring Olivia O’Brien has been stuck on the charts for 23 consecutive weeks! This heart-rendering, piano-driven, painfully honest song speaks straight from the diary. We’ve all been there, hating that we’re so vulnerable to someone who just doesn’t care anymore. The beautiful vocals of Olivia O’Brien, soft-spoken truths of gnash, and the cathartic melody of the piano makes for a hit nobody, not even gnash, saw coming.

Stepping to the side, “Side to Side” comes in at number 5. Sung by chart-topping pop princess, Ariana Grande and iconic Trinidadian rapper, Nicki Minaj, this song has taken the world by storm with its reggae-pop sound. This overtly sexual song’s meaning can be understood by simply reading the lyrics, and I won’t be translating them here… Regardless, this song has got us swaying side to side right along with it.

Coming in at number 4, an equally R-rated song, “Broccoli” by Big Baby D.R.A.M. featuring Lil Yachty has steadily remained on the hip-hop charts for 15 straight weeks. Whether it’s the catchy piano tune, Cee Lo Green-sounding vocals, the flute melody, or the piano, I can’t seem to get the tune out of my head. Perhaps “Broccoli” will someday change the social stereotype of those poor green vegetables everyone ignores on their dinner plates.
Someone who could possibly treat vegetables better, and humans, is Shawn Mendes with his song “Treat You Better” ranking number 3 on my countdown. His heroic, heart-rendering words ensure whoever is listening that he can treat you better than that loser you’re with. Ladies, you deserve a gentleman, and Shawn Mendes seems to be just that.
Yet another gentleman trying to persuade his woman, is Justin Bieber with “Let Me Love You” coming in at number 2. Featuring DJ Snake, this is their sixth chart-topping single together. It’s electronic sound delivers a nice refrain for the pleading, determined ballad of Justin who can’t seem to stay off the charts or get off the roller coaster that is his love life.
Finally, reigning supreme at number 1 is a song we’ve all heard by now, “Closer” by The Chainsmokers featuring Halsey. As Twitter says, if we got a dollar for every time we listened to “Closer” we could probably afford the Rover that it’s talking about. It’s electronic dance music sound with a retro synthesizer makes for an extremely catchy beat drop. Not to mention the lyrics flow one into the other creating the perfect image of a couple whisked away with lust and long-forgotten love. “Closer” has been dominating the charts and our radio stations, and I don’t think it’s gonna get old anytime soon.
