The Omaha Women’s Basketball team upset the South Dakota Coyotes in the opening round of the Summit League Tournament, 64-58. The Mavericks were led by 25 points from Senior forward Mikaela Shaw and aided by 15 more from Junior guard Remy Davenport.
The Mavericks opened the game by scoring six points before South Dakota could even get on the board. South Dakota charged back to take a 7-6 lead, and from there a back-and-forth battle ensued for the duration of the first half. South Dakota pulled away towards the end of the first half and took a 30-25 lead.
The Mavericks never wavered throughout the second half. Senior forward Michaela Dapprich hit consecutive three-point baskets to put the Mavericks ahead. The Mavericks proceeded to grow their lead by as much as eight in the third quarter, and led by two at the end of the third. South Dakota eventually regained the lead with just over six minutes to go in the game on a layup from Senior forward Abigail Fogg. From there, the Mavs regained the lead and never looked back, coming away with the hard fought victory and advancing to round two of the tournament.
Shaw said, “We definitely have some {momentum} right now. Can we keep it going? We feel like we can play with every team in this conference. Western’s a great team, so we’re looking forward to the game tomorrow.”
The Mavericks will be back in action tomorrow against Western Illinois. Noah Sullinger and Alex Abler will have the call beginning at noon on MavRadio.
