(Omaha) — The Omaha Baseball team split a doubleheader with North Dakota State Friday afternoon in games heard on MavRadio.
Omaha (21-14, 6-4) blasted five homers between the two games, including two by senior Caleb Palensky.
Game one of the doubleheader went to the Mavericks by a 7-2 final score. Cole Gruber got things started with a lead-off home run in the bottom of the first.
NDSU (13-18, 4-8) answered with two runs in the second to take a brief lead, but Daniel Jewett tied things back up with a solo shot of his own in the second.
In the fourth, Palensky singled in Alex Schultz and Tyler Splichal hit a sacrifice fly to put the Mavericks up 4-2. Clayton Taylor added a two-run no-doubt homer in the fifth.
Jewett would collect his second RBI of the game in the sixth, when he singled in Palensky for the final margin of 7-2.
Tyler Fox (7-1) was once again phenomenal on the mound, earning his league-leading seventh win. Fox allowed two runs and scattered seven hits, while walking two and striking out four in 5.0 innings of work.
David Ernst (3-3) took the loss, despite striking out four over 6.0 innings.
Game two went to the Bison, 8-6 in 10 innings. The Mavericks got on the board first, when Palensky hit a 3-run shot over the left-center field fence. The Mavericks would build up a 5-3 lead, but NDSU countered with three runs in the seventh to take their first lead of the game.
Taylor knocked his third hit of the game, driving in Gruber to tie things up in the 8th for the Mavericks. NDSU scored two in the 10th, and Omaha left the bases loaded in the bottom half to drop game two.
Jay Flaa (1-2) picked up the win in relief for the Bison. Anthony Falcone (1-4) was saddled with the loss, giving up two runs in 3.0 innings of work.
