Omaha Mavericks fall to the Creighton Bluejays in their Division I Showdown

OMAHA, Neb –In front of the largest attended soccer game in Caniglia Field’s history, the Omaha men’s soccer team lost a close game to the Creighton Bluejays Tuesday night 1-0. The Mavericks came into this match ranked #24 in the nation, with Creighton breaking the top 25 earlier that day.

The first half went back and forth, with the Mavericks having a few good looks but nothing falling. Creighton’s goalkeeper, senior Michael Kluver, made a couple of great saves to keep the score level at 0-0 going into the halftime interval.

In the second half, things turned Creighton’s way. After senior forward Emmanuel Hamzat went down with a leg injury, the Bluejays continued to play on and took advantage of the opportunity and crossed the ball in to Ricky Lopez-Espin who headed it past the Omaha senior goalkeeper Joseph Ghitis. While the Mavericks tried to claw it back, Kluver continued to deny in the goal, preserving the 1-0 victory for Creighton in the latest edition of the Dodge Street Derby in front of almost 5,000 fans.

This brings UNO’s record to 7-2-1 on the season. They open their home conference play on Saturday evening when they face the Fort Wayne Mastadons. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
