Sony had been trying to get a solo Venom movie off the ground since Spider-Man 3 disappointed in 2007, nearly 10 years ago. They have finally pushed it through, despite Spider-Man’s involvement in the Marvel cinematic universe. They have made one good call however, and this will be the basis for a lot of my interest – they cast Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock. Never mind that Hardy has the look and physicality that Brock has in the comics, he’s just a lead man. Hardy is an A-lister that can make nearly any movie he’s in more interesting by simply granting it his presence.
The question is what they’ll have Hardy do with the role, which is still unknown. The director doesn’t have a terrific track record. Ruben Fleischer made a very good film in Zombieland, but he’s been making duds ever since. Nevertheless, Sony has proven in the past that they have no idea what they’re doing (Ghostbusters, Amazing Spider-Man, etc.).
There are a lot of ways this can go wrong, but Tom Hardy seems a big positive.
